Queen Elizabeth II was not a rock star in the traditional sense, but she played her part in making the genre mainstream. First, giving The Beatles MBE's (Member of the British Empire), she followed up offering many knighthood's. Knighted were: Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Ray Davies, Rod Stewart, Van Morrison, Elton John, George Martin, Cliff Richard (Britian's 'Elvis'), Barry Gibb and Ringo Starr. Sir Ringo didn't sound proper, so he became Sir Richard Starkey. Honorary knighthoods to non-British citizens (not allowed to use the prefix "Sir") went to Bob Geldof, Ravi Shankar and Bono. David Bowie turned down his knighthood. Keith Richards made it well-known he would refuse it after Mick got his, so was not given one.
