Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, John Bonham

LED ZEPPELIN                                                                   1969                                                                   Atlantic Records

An album track from Led Zeppelin II. Time - 4:14. Released in U.S.A. October 22, 1969.

Recorded at A&R Studios and Atlantic Studios, New York City, New York, USA, May 21 & July, 1969. Produced by Jimmy Page. Engineered by Eddie Kramer and
Jimmy Douglass.

It is a song about a relationsship ending prematurely, but it is not the lyrics that make this track great. The guitar solo, which was recorded at a different studio & time then the rest of the song was incerted into the track. It would be the first time Page delivered his Gibson Les Paul / Marshall Stack combination. It would be one of only two songs Led Zeppelin played during every tour from it's beginning until the end. Is this song important? Rolling Stone named it #328 in their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time; Guitar World named it's guitar solo as the 16th greatest. - Larry -

Jimmy Page - 1998:Guitar World

"I just fancied doing it. I was always trying to do something different, or something no one else had thought of. But the interesting thing about that solo is that it was recorded after we had already finished “Heartbreaker”—it was an afterthought. That whole section was recorded in a different studio and was sort of slotted in the middle. If you notice, the whole sound of the guitar is different. ..... The solo itself was made up on the spot. I think that was one of the first things I ever played through a Marshall. I was always having trouble with amps, and Marshalls were state-of-the-art reliability. By that time I was using a Les Paul, anyway, and that was just a classic setup."

Jimmy Page - Rolling Stone

"It wasn't structured at all [laughs]. I had a start. I knew where and how I was going to begin. And I just did it. There was an amplifier [in the studio] that I was trying out. It sounded good, so I thought, "OK, take a deep breath, and play." I did three takes and chose one of them. They were all different. The solo sounds constructed - and it is, sort of, but purely of the moment. For me, a solo is something where you just fly, but within the context of the song."
