Highway Of Heroes is the stretch of Highway 401 between Trenton and Toronto. It is 172 kilometre's long. Every time a convoy carrying the body of a dead soldier travels that route, Canadians line the overpasses above to pay their respects to the fallen soldier. The Trews took the name of this part of the highway to commemorate a hometown solder who was not only the first Canadian female soldier to be killed on duty in Afghanistan, she was the 16th Canadian soldier killed in Canadian operations in Afghanistan and was the first female Canadian combat soldier killed in combat, period. Net proceeds from the song went to the Canadian Hero Fund, a registered charity.

COLIN MACDONALD - 2010:The Rockpit

"the song was about Nichola Goddard the first female Canadian soldier to be killed in Afghanistan in 2006, she was from my hometown. They just wrote a book about her and my mom was interviewed for it as it’s a pretty small town where everyone knows everyone else. She reminded me of the story on the phone one night when we were on the eve of our Canadian acoustic tour. John-Angus and I wrote the song down the phone in like 15 minutes. We toured it for while then recorded it back in February this year, put it out as a single, and it’s done real well."

COLIN MACDONALD - 2016:Music Life Magazine

"Highway of Heroes, for example, is just a song that we wrote over the phone with Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar. And with anything in music you can’t plan if something is going to take off, you can’t plan your relevance, it just happens. You work hard at what you do, and you love what you do and you try to do it to the best of your abilities and if happens to collide with culture and you’re lucky, it works out. ..... Some of the songs were chosen (for the Greatest Hits) because of radio play and then we chose a few fan favourites that didn’t necessarily chart as well, but that people loved. Like Highway of Heroes never charted very well, but it’s one of our biggest songs."
