Recorded at The Hearse, Berkeley, California and Cornerstone Studios, Los Angeles, California, USA in 2004. Produced by Jeff Saltzman and The Killers. Engineered by Dave Stedronsky and Mark Needham.

The initial part of the song was written by David, about jealousy in general. Brandon picked up on it, finishing it about his experience with an ex cheating on him. The song was originally released in 1983 with limited success in Britian only. It was upon it's re-release the next year, 1984 that it became an international hit. One reason was the first video was replace with a new, more mainstream one upon re-release. - Larry -

David Keuning - 2005 - Contact Music

"He was the only person to reply to my ad who wasn't a complete freak. He came over with his keyboard and we started going through song ideas straight away. I had the verse to 'Mr Brightside' and he went away and wrote the chorus. That was the first song we wrote together and remains the only song that we've played at every single Killers show."

Ronnie Vannucci - 2005 - Free Williamsburg

"Brandon and David had written 'Mr. Brightside' before Mark and I were in the band. We are a band most importantly and we work on all the songs together eventually. It makes it fun because the creation of every song is so different."

Brandon Flowers - 2009:Q Magazine

"I was asleep and I knew something was wrong. I have these instincts. I went to the Crown and Anchor and my girlfriend was there with another guy."

David Keuning - 2005 - Access

"It's about the deep dark depths of the jealous mind. I'ts a dark place sometimes, and I think we captured it pretty well. I'm a jealous person so I'm good at that, and I figured it out. It's one of our true songs. Some of our songs are completely made up and some of our songs are real, and 'Mr. Brightside' was real, so it came to me pretty easily. It was a good song, but it's not ours anymore."

Brandon Flowers - 2013:Huffington Post

"It came from this cassette of ideas that Dave gave me, and one of them was the 'Mr. Brightside' riff. I was able to slap a chorus and some lyrics onto it, and I knew I liked it. But it wasn't until we first tried it out with a drummer that I knew it was special. We went to the guy's house and showed him the song, and I got the goosebumps after that. Lyrically, it's about an odd girlfriend of mine. All the emotions in the song are real. When I was writing the lyrics, my wounds from it were still fresh. I am Mr. Brightside! But I think that's the reason the song has persisted - because it's real. People pick up on those things. And that goes all the way down to the production; we recorded it in a couple of hours, but it just sounds right, you know?"
