(Mick Jagger, Keith Richards)
Bill Wyman claims he came up with the original guitar riff, getting no credit. Jagger and Richards began writing the lyrics after hearing loud footsteps of Richard's gardener Jack Dyer outside of a window. Richard told Jagger that it was 'jumpin' Jack'. Said Jagger to Rolling Stone, 1995, it came "out of all the acid of Satanic Majesties. It's about having a hard time and getting out. Just a metaphor for getting out of all the acid things". (LB)

The members of Cream attended a Jimi Hendrix concert in 1967, and were so taken by the performance, that Jack Bruce came home and came up with the riff. That same nigbt, looking out the window, producer Pete Brown began the lyrics (although not getting a writers credit) with 'It's getting near dawn and lights close their tired eyes'. Clapton later came up with the title while writing the refrain. (LB)

(Mars Bonfire)
Bonfire was an early member of Steppenwolf when they were known as the Sparrows, and his brother was the drummer in the current band. Although inspired by a poster of a motorcycle with a phrase 'Born to Ride', the song was actually written about a car as he had just purchased his first one. It was only the next year when it became the theme of 'Easy Rider' that it became a bikers tune. (LB)

A fictitious song about a traveller coming to and leaving town, placed in Nazereth, Pennsylvania. It was influenced by southern music, the Bible, the bands own experiences and people they knew. It was also inspired by movies of Ingmar Bergman and Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel. (LB)

(Rushton Moreve, John Kay)
While the song started with Rushton Moreve's riff, the song came alive when John Kay took the beginning of the recording home and put it on his new stereo system he just purchased. The quality of the sound blew him away bringing on the line ''I like to dream ... right between the sound machine.' and the rest of the song went from there. (LB)
